The Garden Cycles Bike Tour Presents: A Festival of Farms, Music and Film!

Hey all! We, the Garden Cyclers, are psyched to present the premiere of our documentary, “New Faces from the Farm” – and we’re even more psyched to have you join us in Purcellville, Virginia for a weekend of music, food + drink and outdoorsy fun! Here’s some information about what to bring, what to expect and how to get out there (and back):

What to expect

Saturday includes a full line-up of local and traveling musicians. We’ll be serving up some kind of home-grown meal for dinner that day, as well as providing homebrew and other beverages. There’ll be a farm tour around 1pm and you are welcome to take a hike among the Environmental Center’s 800 acres of wilderness.

The first music set starts at 2 and the film will start at 7pm – see the complete schedule for details.

What to bring

This is a BYO – Dishware Event! Zero waste is our goal, so bring plates, silverware, a cup or two as well as food for lunch and breakfast on Sunday and any additional drinks you might desire. There’s also some small towns nearby, a gas station and diner within a few miles. And obviously bring your own camping gear if you’re spending the night out under the stars with us.

There’ll be water and restrooms on site.

A word about the venue and rules

The Blue Ridge Environmental Center and the Mountain View Farm have been kind enough to let us use their space – which will also remain open to the general public while we have our event. So we will be working together to manage any trash we generate, drink alcoholic beverages responsibly, and treat the farm and wilderness areas with respect.

What’s my $25 going towards?

The Garden Cycles Bike Tour is a grassroots film effort, meaning we are completely funded by community fundraisers like this one. We will use the proceeds from this event to package and distribute our film and get it out to audiences across the country. You can help us do that and have a bucket of fun at the same time! Part of the proceeds of this event will also benefit the Blue Ridge Environmental Center, a non-profit land conservancy that is our host.

Bike Directions

Interactive Map of the W and OD Trail

Biking simply involves hopping on the W and OD Trail in Shirlington, VA and taking 50 miles to the end in Purceville, VA. The W and OD is a flat, paved bike trail with beautiful views of the countryside. From there you have to bike a couple miles on two-lane highways to get to the farm:

Bike directions after trail:

This section of the ride is the hilliest (not too bad at all though) but beautiful countryside.

The trail will take you into ‘downtown’ Purcellville
Get on E. Main St./Rte. 7

Take a RIGHT on N.21st which turns into Hillsboro Rd./Rte. 690

LEFT Charles Town Pike/Rte. 9

Veer RIGHT on Harper’s Ferry Rd./Rte. 671

LEFT at Blue Ridge Center (once at the center, it’s a gravel road so either be cautious or feel free to walk your bike and enjoy the scenery)

There will be a group ride leaving from Lamont Park in Mt. Pleasant at 8:30am. 10am the riders will meet additional people at the Vienna metro if you want to skip the urban/suburban ride. Estimated time of arrival at the farm is 2pm.

Riders can RSVP to Kacie or contact her with questions at kaciew@riseup.net or 732-616-5022.

If you do ride, remember to bring patches — Kacie and Mike will have a pump — plenty of water and a bagged lunch or snacks for the trip.

If you are riding your bike out to the farm but need a ride back, we might be able to help coordinate that. Email gardencycles@gmail.com if you need a ride or can offer a ride to cyclists. But you should try and make your own arrangements first.

***Drivers are meeting up at Bea Trickett’s house, which is 1010 Hamlin St. NE,  4 blocks North of Rhode Island Metro stop. Folks are meeting there at 10:30am to figure out carpooling so if you need a ride up there, get up there, or if you have room in your car then help out by meeting up.
