Food garden education is GROWING in DC!

We want to congratulate the 7th Street Garden! They have found a new garden site for the 2009 growing season, and beyond! This is very exciting news. They have been working over on Bread for the City’s site for the past 2 growing seasons promoting food security and healthy communities.  Bread for the City owns the property they were on and they will be expanding their operations to include a new medical clinic on that site this fall. The Garden has been working hard educating youth and adults in the Shaw and Bloomingdale neighborhoods about urban food production, nutrition, gardening skills, and much more.

Land is always a challenge – but they found a community that really supports their work and purpose and  wants them in their neighborhood (less then a mile from the old spot). The 7th Street Garden will now be located on the site of the newly closed Gage Eckington School in the LeDroit Park neighborhood – 3rd and Elm Street, NW. This new site is larger and they “plan to have irrigation, a greenhouse, a little fruit orchard, and a covered learning space” AND they also “hope to expand programs possibly including public CSA shares and community garden plots”. Please check them out as they make way for some great new changes (get ready for a new name). They will need help and assistance in many different forms so if you’re in DC – help them out! Again, congratulations to the 7th Street Garden!
