Thoughts for Food

We (Lara, Kat, Liz, and Erika) are working towards a self-propelled round trip tour from Washington, D.C. to Montreal, Canada this summer/fall to document local alternatives to the current industrial agricultural models. Stops along the tour include urban community gardens, rural local foods movements, CSA farms, co-ops, and more. Some organizations we will meet with include, the Pedal People, who have a bicycle-powered trash and recycling service in North Hampton, Massachusetts. The four of us also plan to spend a considerable amount of time in Philadelphia and New York where urban farms and gardens are providing local foods and livelihoods for the urban poor. Finally in Montreal, we plan to visit the Santropol Roulant, a meals on wheels program that delivers locally produced meals to elderly citizens on bikes!

We will use bicycles as our sole means of transportation to demonstrate a viable alternative to fossil fuel powered transport. Additionally, we will connect these innovative projects along the east coast. We will record conversations and videotape working farmers, community gardeners, and organizers so that we can share knowledge with communities as we travel. We will link together these local food movements and demonstrate that the movement is growing. In the end, with the recordings of the stories and experiences we’ve gained we will put together a documentary, promoting it as a resource for academic institutions and in our own budding grassroots initiatives in D.C. Ultimately, this knowledge will be used to build more local food initiatives where it is desperately needed in our poor, malnourished, capital city. We are already actively engaged in a current urban garden project called the 7th Street Garden, which helps to provide food and education to the lower income Shaw neighborhood in D.C.

We’re so excited to get on the road! We are continuing to actively seek sponsors and receive appropriate donations to help make the tour possible.

If you have comments, questions, thoughts…we’d love to hear from you!

Healthy harvests!
